Ugly Betty Is the New Charlie Brown…

Published by V at 12:49 am under Primetime TV, Ugly Betty Edit This

I’m starting to realize that I’m watching Ugly Betty for the other characters in the show, rather than Betty herself. I think the writers have totally lost it where she’s concerned. Obviously viewers like the idea of an underdog triumphing, but they seem to be enjoying the underdog bit a little too much. How many times can a girl make an utter fool of herself by tripping, flying headlong into something, or doing a humiliating thing out of some weird naive sense of duty?

Tonight’s episode was stomach churning. So, Betty always gets dumped on for being in her own little benign Betty world. Tonight she decides to be suspicious of her high school arch enemy–as she should be–and guess what happens? She gets dumped on. Lesson learned, she decides to return to Betty world, thinking the best of others and doing the right thing. So guess what? She gets dumped on. Enough already.

And what is WITH the wardrobe? If Betty is supposed to be so smart, and is working for a *fashion* magazine, why can’t she wear a normal outfit? It was one thing in the beginning, where she wore what she could afford and had a quirky innocence about her. Now she’s got a new outfit on every five minutes, and each piece of clothing has a different pattern and color. Is she getting dressed in the dark? Personal style is one thing, looking like a clown is another. Ugh.

So please, dear writers. Let’s get back to Betty’s personal growth and let her have some fashion sense. And her teeth should be straight by now. And please–let’s not have the next episode being Kimmie holding the football and Betty running to kick it and Kimmie pulling it away at the last moment.

‘Cause I always hated Charlie Brown, too. I watched Peanuts for Snoopy.
