Robert Carlyle to star in Stargate Universe
As there’s been great success with multiple Law & Orders and CSIs, why not another Stargate? While I haven’t seen any of the other series, Stargate Universe may be the one that draws me in. Robert Carlyle of Full Monty and Trainspotting fame (as well as Ravenous, Angela’s Ashes, Eragon, and 28 Weeks Later) has been chosen as the star of the latest in the franchise. He’ll play Dr. David Rush, one of the scientists at a secret base that also houses soldiers and civilians. When the base gets compromised, the group escapes through the stargate and finds themselves on an ancient ship in a distant part of space. They must figure out how this mysterious ship works to get themselves back home again.
Stargate Universe is supposed to be a bit darker and edgier than the previous incarnations, which sounds just right for Robert Carlyle. The appealing Scottish actor isn’t afraid of darker roles (drug addicts and cannibals for starters), is always intriguing to watch, and he’s a good choice to draw in viewers. Word is the rest of the cast will be unknowns, but that’s nothing new for sci-fi fans. If the show works, they won’t be unknown for long.
The plot of Stargate Universe sounds a bit Star Trek: Voyager to me, with a ship full of people wondering if they’ll ever see home again. It’s a good hook for a show, but the adventures they encounter along the way will be what sustains the viewership. I’m looking forward to a new sci-fi adventure, and it can hopefully be a good genre replacement for this year’s departing Battlestar Galactica. Filming begins in February of this new year, and the show should air on the Sci-Fi channel around summertime. Stay tuned for more news on Stargate Universe, as it develops.
