Medium Goofs up Timeline
My husband picked up on a gaffe in tonight’s episode of Medium, “About Last Night”. It’s a small point, but still there. The subplot of this episode revolved around Allison’s husband Joe teaching their daughter Ariel to drive. This was a big event, as she had just turned old enough to get her learner’s permit and needed lessons.
Turns out, however, that Ariel was driving in last week’s episode. I remember thinking that some of the dialogue between Ariel and Joe about her driving seemed like we’d missed part of the story. Apparently we had–it just took place an episode later.
*SPOILER ALERT* I’m not sure if the switch of Medium episodes was intentional or accidental, but I can see why they might have decided to swap them around. Last week, Allison got somewhat possessed by the urges of an extremist and set about making a bomb. While Joe was understandably frightened and upset, I think he would have been even more upset when just a short time earlier his wife had been actually possessed by a murdered woman and lost 6 hours of her life, waking up under a highway overpass. The reversed episode order makes his reactions more aligned with the progression of events, I think. The only problem with the switch was the unfortunate bungling of the timeline with their daughter’s driving.
Over all, I’d prefer it if they didn’t do many more of these “possessed” type episodes. While “About Last Night” was a really good mystery and a compelling story, it gets tough to watch Allison time and again acting crazy and putting her family through hell. Considering the bomb-making and now an attempted murder, it would be realistic for Joe to be sleeping with the lights on and a gun under his pillow. Plus, just as pure entertainment value, watching Alison get hysterical and fight with her husband isn’t all that fun week to week.
Medium is still a quality show and I’m sure has a lot of great stories left to tell. I’m just hoping that fewer of them involve possession.
