TV Comedy News
First up for this week’s news in primetime TV comedy is the premiere of the show In the Motherhood on ABC Thursday at 8/7c. I was originally tempted to watch because I adore the crazy awesome Megan Mullally (Will & Grace, The New Adventures of Old Christine). Seeing the clips over at TV.com makes me a lot less tempted, however. In the Motherhood mostly looked painful to watch, rather than funny, and is an example of my most hated TV trend: stupid parents and smart, dismissive children. No thanks. Maybe the series will hit its stride later in the season…but I think I’ll wait and see the reviews before I invest the time on this one.
In other comedy news, Hollywood Reporter tells us that Roseanne Barr is looking to return to the family comedy sitcom. Hooking up with Roseanne producer Caryn Mandabach, Barr is hoping to once again strike comedy gold. Particularly in the early years, Roseanne was a hilarious and realistic show that also offered some excellent drama, too. It would be nice to have a fun and quality show like this back on the air, so here’s hoping Roseanne Barr can bring us something worth watching again.
For comedy/drama crossover news, the uber talented John C. McGinley is shifting from Scrubs comedy to the new CBS drama Back that I mentioned a while…back. (And the show name really has to be changed–I couldn’t even find the post in my own blog, how are people going to do searches on Back on Google?) Some outlets are making off like this is a big deal, but while McGinley has gotten the most recognition for Scrubs and other comedy outings, anyone who’s seen him in Platoon knows the man can do drama exceptionally well. Knowing he’s now involved in the new series Back makes me even more interested to tune in.
