Lost — “Some Like It Hoth”

*SPOILER ALERT* Tonight’s Lost episode, “Some Like It Hoth”, gave us more of the inside scoop on Miles (Ken Leung). We finally got the explanation for those weird little things Miles seemed to know in past episodes, simply by walking over a patch of ground. Turns out he can hear people’s thoughts even after they’re gone. It’s almost like he hears the echo of the person and what remains of their life story and experiences.

It was fun to see him continue his hostile bantering with Hurley (Jorge Garcia)–hostile on his side only, of course. After inadvertently discovering Miles’ gift for communing with the dead, Hurley shares his own tale of conversations with those long gone. I’m still not entirely sure that Hurley’s conversations are all in his head or real communication, but the ghost of Ana-Lucia did definitely get him out of a jam once.

The big eye opener of the episode was discovering that Miles’ father is none other than Dr. Chang (François Chau), the man who appears in all of the Dharma videos the Lost gang discovered on their original landing on the island. I feel like I should have seen that one coming, but I never did. The thing is that from what Miles knows, his father kicked his wife and son out when Miles was just a baby. Miles never knew him, and Miles’ mother only spoke of him on her deathbed.

Believing he can’t change the past, and that his father is really long dead, Miles has no interest in getting to know his father on the island. It’s a nice dynamic as Hurley tries to get Miles to move on from all the hate and actually get to know his father. He gets Miles’ attention when he reveals how he gave his own father a second chance, and how much better his life was for it.

Miles goes along with Dr. Chang on another errand, to pick up new arrivals in the submarine. There’s a chance Miles may get to know his father better–and perhaps a chance that he may find a reason for his father’s actions that he didn’t expect. We all know things aren’t always as they seem.

The wonderful kicker of an ending is when Miles walks up to the sub and sees the long missing Daniel Faraday getting out. And when he says hello, Daniel *recognizes* him. For a moment I’d wondered if it was another time-traveling version of Daniel who wouldn’t know who Miles was yet. Perhaps in the next episode we’ll learn where Daniel’s been all this time.

Other items of note: the dead body Miles picks up from the construction site of the hatch looks like he has a bullet wound. But later Miles repeats what the dead man’s thoughts were, of his filling being pulled out of his head. What looked like foul play now looks to be an actual accident, perhaps from the powerful magnetic pull attracting the filling?

Kate, Kate, Kate. Not content to leave well enough alone, Kate (Evangeline Lilly) tries to console Ben’s father Roger (Jon Gries) and instead arouses his suspicion. Jack (Matthew Fox) possibly scares Roger into silence for the moment, but there’s no telling how this is going to go. Especially when Sawyer (Josh Holloway) has to knock out his security team buddy Phil (Patrick Fischler)–who has seen Sawyer and Kate on the security tapes. This can only get worse, because what are they going to do with him?

And a big LOL to Hurley for trying to rewrite The Empire Strikes Back to send to Lucas. There’s a good chance Hurley can write better dialogue!

Watch Lost on ABC Wednesdays at 9/8c. Looks like next week will be one of the Lost recap specials, and then a new episode the following week.

TV Shows Nearing the Chopping Block

This week TV.com seems certain of the demise of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Considering Dollhouse’s ratings are on the same level, it might not be long for the schedule, either, unless they decide to give Joss Whedon a chance to build momentum.

TV by the Numbers  seems similarly convinced that In the Motherhood, Cupid, Castle, and The Unusuals are doomed. Nothing official as yet, but the ratings aren’t all that fab. Better Off Ted is on the cusp.

You can see from my earlier blog posts that I won’t cry over In the Motherhood or The Unusuals. I would, however, cry over Cupid, Castle, and Better Off Ted. Especially Better Off Ted. That show is just outrageous and risky and crazy and damn funny. And I love every actor on it. The problem may be that it’s the perfect match for Scrubs, and if it ends up without a sitcom pairing next season, that could put it in jeopardy. Which would be a damn shame. But honestly, Scrubs‘ star has been waning for some time, so pairing Better Off Ted with another up and coming sitcom could actually improve its ratings.

I love Nathan Fillion, but Castle suffers from some weak casting. And terrible scheduling. I’ve missed it twice now because I’m watching Medium and forget to record Castle. Castle isn’t a powerhouse show, but Fillion is ridiculously charming and could do well in a more out of the way timeslot. It’s one of those times where I would welcome a timeslot shift and it could save the show from oblivion.

I suspect Cupid suffers in the ratings because the plot is a hard sell. It sounds incredibly cheesy to say this guy thinks he’s Cupid and goes around matchmaking people. But in actuality, the show is full of heart and sweetness and Bobby Cannavale zips out the one-liners so fast and charmingly it makes your head spin. Each week we get really cool guest stars that you can identify from other sitcoms or shows you’ve loved in the past, and there’s a new set of characters to fall in love with. It’s not brain surgery, but it’s a really pleasant way to spend an hour. It’s a great antitode to all the hard-edged crime procedurals and medical dramas out there.

If you want to save these shows, watching them online may help. If you’re not a Nielsen family, they have no idea you care. Visit the website, watch the vids, leave comments. Let them know people are watching!

Doctor Who Easter Special Planet of the Dead

The Doctor’s latest Easter special gives us one of the more “fun romp” style Doctor Who episodes. We begin the “Planet of the Dead” with Lady Christina de Souza (Michelle Ryan) pulling off a Mission Impossible-esque heist of an ancient gold goblet from a museum. The lady thief barely escapes the authorities by paying off a bus driver–just seconds before the Doctor boards that very bus.

Tracking down small tears in the fabric of the universe, the Doctor is stunned when the bus stumbles directly into one of those suddenly very-much-larger-tears and spits the bus down onto a vacant, hot, desert planet. As the other passengers panic to varying degrees, including a psychic woman who hears the voices of death and fears oncoming dangers, the Doctor and Lady Christina do their best to puzzle themselves out of the situation.

The Time Lord and the Thief Lady make for a nice pair, discovering their similar interests in risk-taking, cleverness, and disregard for the rules as they lightly spar for dominance. Christina starts off taking charge, but like the Doctor, she’s willing to take help from those with skills in the areas she lacks.

Throw in a couple different scary alien races, danger to the Earth, elite military forces (led smoothly and efficiently by Captain Magambo (Noma Dumezweni)), a genius human scientist who worships/loves the legendary Doctor, and scared but gutsy civilians and you’ve got yourself a rip-roaring Doctor Who adventure that even includes a sexy snog between the Lady and the Lord.

*SPOILER ALERT* While most of this Doctor episode is standalone fun, we do get sucked back down into harsher realities twice. The first when the Doctor refuses to have another companion because he just can’t handle anymore loss. Rose was certainly a heartbreaker for him, but I think what happened with Donna really left its mark on him. And then the close of the episode, with the psychic’s prediction that something bad was coming that would basically be the end of the docto–well, you know when the Doctor looks afraid that things are bad.

With only two episodes left of David Tennant’s reign, we know that something big is about to happen. Unfortunately we’ve got to wait until Christmas to find out what…
